The District Municipality of Muskoka is currently recruiting for Level 1 Operators

The District of Muskoka is responsible for operating and maintaining all municipal water and wastewater systems within its six Area Municipalities – this includes nine drinking water systems and nine sewage systems plus lagoons.  The primary roles of our Water & Wastewater Teams are to supply safe drinking water and to protect the environment and, by association, protect source water for drinking water and the integrity of the surface water within Muskoka.

To join our team, you will have a keen interest in maintaining safe drinking water systems for our communities.

Our systems are broken into three (3) regions – North (Huntsville, Port Sydney & Baysville), Central (Bracebridge & Gravenhurst) and West (Port Severn, Bala, Port Carling & MacTier).

At the present time, we have the following Level 1 Operator vacancies:

  • Permanent – North (Lines) – 1 vacancy
  • Permanent – West (Lines & Treatment) – 1 vacancy
  • Temporary (up to 1 year) – Central (Lines) – 1 vacancy

As a Level 1 Operator, you will take day to day direction from a Chief Operator and management oversight from your Area Manager.  The Level 1 Operator’s main responsibilities include:

  • Assisting with the operation and maintenance of various facilities including monitoring and recording of all charts, meters, gauges, and preparation of the daily logging of the facility performance etc. on a daily basis
  • Assisting in the sampling and laboratory testing associated with water and sewage works.
  • Responding to customer concerns and complaints
  • Carrying out, or making arrangements for, necessary repairs on any equipment related to assigned area.
  • Other related duties, as assigned

Our Level 1 Operators work Monday to Friday (40 hour work week), with mandatory participation in a rotating on-call schedule (which does include evening, weekend & Stat holiday schedule).  These jobs are governed by the CUPE Outside Collective Agreement.

What you will bring to us:

On the practical side, you will have a minimum of a Grade 12 diploma coupled with 1-2 years of experience in water & wastewater operations.  Your skill set will also include an aptitude for electrical and/ or mechanical work.  Licensing requirements vary by Region/ Facility to which you are assigned.  For the current vacancies, we require a minimum of the following licenses:

Applicants with OIT certificates in the specified categories may also be considered.

All of our Operators are expected to have solid computer skills and strong interpersonal and communications skills, enabling you to effectively interact with the public and your colleagues.  As these jobs require driving District vehicles, you are required to hold a valid Ontario driver’s license.

Our expectation is that all Operators Work safely and in compliance with relevant statutes and regulations and within the safe work procedures and directives as established by the District.

What We Offer:

Permanent employees are offered a competitive total rewards package, including a comprehensive health and dental benefits plan, and enrollment in the OMERS (Ontario Municipal Employees Retirement System) pension plan.  Temporary employees receive a comparable hourly wage rate but are not eligible for the benefits & pension plans.

The probationary hourly rate for a licensed Level 1 Operator is $25.39 plus applicable license premiums.  This rate increases to $27.64 per hour per the CUPE Collective pay grid.

OIT applicants can expect to earn $22.70 per hour (probationary), increasing to $24.82 per hour per the CUPE Collective pay grid.

Current Licensing Premiums for these vacancies vary between $0.32 per hour (North & Central Lines) to $0.64 per hour (West Lines & Treatment), provided you hold all of the required licenses. Should you hold higher level licenses than the required for this job, additional premiums will be applied.
