Position Summary

Reporting to the Supervisor of Environmental Services, the Maintenance III (Environmental Services) is responsible for maintaining and monitoring the water distribution system and wastewater collection system within the Town of Grimsby. This involves performing skilled Licensed Operator functions related to maintenance, construction, monitoring and rehabilitation of the water distribution system and wastewater collection system to provide compliance with Provincial Safe Drinking Water Act, 2002 Legislation and Regulations, Town By-laws and Standards, as well as performing equipment operator functions within the Corporation.

Duties and Responsibilities

  • Responsible for all heavy equipment operations in the department which includes backhoes, combination sewer cleaner/hydrovac truck, dump trucks and all other equipment requiring specialized training and licenses, and to ensure all excavations and trenching are carried out only after all utility locates and their requirements have been performed.

To ensure all trenching, excavations, traffic control and work performed around and within the work site are carried out in accordance with the Occupational Health and Safety Act and Regulations for Construction Projects.

  • Responsible for a variety of tasks including flushing, re-parging, ladder replacement, module lock and frame/lid replacement, debris removal to ensure no blockages, perform general inspections when required to prevent any problems and to monitor overflows following periods of large amounts or precipitation.
  • Responsible also for sewer and water maintenance and monitoring, which includes all Maintenance I and Maintenance II (Environmental Services) duties and responsibilities.
  • Perform “locates” which may include locating water and sewer mains, home laterals and services to ensure damages do not occur when third parties are digging within a certain area.
  • Performs dye and smoke testing in sewer lateral installations.
  • Required periodically to assist with meter reading
  • Required to be cognizant of and carry out day-to-day duties within the provisions of Ontario Regulations with respect to health and safety issues.
  • Complete maintenance assignments to ensure uninterrupted water service to customers, preventative maintenance, flushing, replacement, general repairs, and rebuilding valves.
  • Complete as required replacement of outdated or faulty services, replace curb stops, boxes and rods if they are un-operational and raising and lowering of services boxes.
  • Install new water services including tapping into charged systems.
  • Fire hydrant maintenance which includes flushing, greasing, rebuilding of various makes and models, painting and replacement of secondary valve on hydrant.
  • Maintenance and installation of water meters at various locations.
  • Periodically perform water sampling of system.
  • Maintenance of water filling station.
  • Interprets drawings and site plans.
  • Assists with winter roads operations as required.
  • Other related duties as assigned from time-to-time.

Education, Licenses and Training Required

  • Ontario Secondary School Graduation Diploma.
  • Class ‘D’ License with ‘Z’ endorsement required and must be maintained.
  • Successfully complete OGRA-Instruction for Loader/Backhoe Operators Training and shall recertify every six years.
  • SCBA training/Confined Space Entry/Roadway work operations (traffic control)/ First Aid and CPR.
  • Maintain a Drinking Water – Certified Operators License for a Large Municipal Residential – Class I Distribution System.
  • Maintain a Waste Water Collection System – Class I Certified Operators License.
  • Maintain a Meter Installer License/Certificate.


Completion of Maintenance II (Environmental Services) requirements, plus 2 years of heavy equipment operating experience or 5 years of related experience, plus the education, training and licenses required above.

Special Condition

This position is subject to employment conditions as found in the “Document of General Working Conditions (Hourly Staff)” and, therefore, subject to scheduled weekend standby time, after hours on-call, and call-in requirements with compensation per the Town’s current “Document of General Working Conditions”.  The rate of pay is also subject to market conditions as disclosed in the “Document of General Working Conditions (Hourly)”.

Resumes are being accepted for the full-time position of Maintenance III within the Environmental

Services Department reporting to the Supervisor of Environmental Services.  You will operate and

maintain the Town of Grimsby’s Water Distribution System (Class 1) and Wastewater Collection System

(Class 1) in accordance with Ministry of Environment Reg. 170 and the Town of Grimsby’s Water

and Wastewater Operations Manual and DWQMS Policy.  This position is also responsible for all heavy

equipment operation within the department which includes backhoe, loader, combination sewer

flusher/hydrovac, along with any other relevant equipment associated with the department’s operation.

This position will also participate in Winter Control operations as required.


This is a non-union position and is subject to a 9-hour shift schedule (7:00 a.m. – 4:30 pm) with a

30-minute lunch break and every other Friday off – 36 hrs. (Week 1)/44 hrs. (Week 2).  This position is also subject to a weekly on-call rotation and overtime.

Qualifications and Requirements

  • Ontario Secondary School Diploma;


  • MOECC Class 1 Water Distribution and Class 1 Wastewater Collection;


  • Class ‘D’ Licence with ‘Z’ endorsement with clean abstract;


  • Water Meter Installer/Certificate;


  • First Aid and CPR;


  • SCBA Training/Confined Space Entry Training/Book 7 Training/Trench Training;


  • Ability to operate backhoe/loader/combination sewer flusher/hydrovac, along with proof of training for operation of these units is required;


  • Must live within a reasonable distance of the Town Of Grimsby for after-hour response;


  • Physically able to perform all duties required for this position; and


  • Computer literacy using mobile laptop and database software.
