The Public Works Department has a vacancy for an Operator/Maintainer in its
Water/Wastewater Divisions.

Reporting to the Water and Wastewater Lead Operator, the successful candidate will assist with
duties as assigned throughout all municipal water/wastewater systems.

The “ideal” candidate will have:

– Ministry of Environment Wastewater Treatment and Collection License Class 2.
– Water Treatment and Distribution Class 2.
– Experience in the electrical/mechanical fields.

Minimum qualifications:
– OIT license for water treatment/distribution, wastewater treatment
– A demonstrated work history that highlights teamwork and a positive attitude.

This regular full time position is based on 40 hours per week with a salary range of (NM8) $30.72
(Step 1) to $34.96 (Step 5) per hour, with a comprehensive benefit package.

Water Treatment Operations
1. Reads flow meters, gauges and other recording instruments to measure water output and
consumption levels, turbidity content and chlorine levels.
2. Monitors and inspects plant and well equipment and systems to detect malfunctions and to ensure
smooth operations.
3. Collects and tests water samples from a variety of locations for chemical and bacterial
4. Performs lab work such as water tests for chlorine, aluminum pH and turbidity.
5. Analyzes test results and instrument readings and makes adjustments.
6. Observes and records information related to pumps, valves, motors and other water treatment
7. Reviews and trends data using SCADA and EXEL.
8. Advises the Overall Responsible Operator and other personnel of equipment performance, unusual
occurrences and corrective actions required at water treatment facilities within the Municipality.
9. Stores, handles and mixes chemicals and adds to the process in accordance with standard
operating procedures or as dictated by water quality.
10. Operates and monitors equipment in the filtration and treatment plant, wells and water tower
to regulate the treatment and distribution of water, ensure smooth operations and detect
11. Changes chlorine gas cylinders while using self contained breath apparatus.

Water Distribution Operations
12. Conducts dead end flushing and chlorine checks for distribution supply systems.
13. Conducts hydrant checks and repairs or replaces hydrants which includes thawing and winter
flagging. Maintains areas around hydrants in a clean and safe manner.
14. Reads and repairs water meters.
15. Collects water samples from a variety of Municipal distribution systems.
16. Monitors work sites to ensure traffic control and signage are in place.
17. Performs locates for utilities and customer work sites.
18. Inspects new installs completed by others.
19. Monitors, repairs and replaces distribution pipelines and fixtures for a variety of Municipal
20. Sets up metering equipment and back flow prevention and records usage for non-municipal users.

Waste Water Treatment Operations
21. Tests and maintains diesel generators, including changing oil and anti-freeze and replacing
22. Completes preventive maintenance tasks on light controls and milltronic controls.
23. Inspects batteries and fire extinguishers, identifies problems and takes corrective actions.
24. Power washes and scrubs effluent chambers to remove sludge.
25. Collects samples and conducts tests and submits samples to laboratories.
26. Monitors and maintains UV systems.

Waste Water Collections Operations
27. Troubleshoots and repairs main sewage line breaks and installs new lateral lines.
28. Determines the location of lateral blockages, identifies possible causes using CCTV and
implements solutions.
29. Conducts confined space work in and around areas of potential hazardous gases and or low
oxygen levels such as sewer mains, wet wells, meter pits, crawl spaces and excavations.
30. Oversees non-municipal waste water dumping by outside contractors.
31. Conducts daily inspections of pumping stations and low lift stations, logs information and
takes corrective actions.
32. Removes, inspects, completes preventive maintenance tasks on and repairs sewage pumps and
relief valves.

Customer Service
33. Responds to emergency callouts and coordinates repairs to water and waste water equipment and
34. Responds to questions from the public, giving out information and resolving problems.
35. Responds to complaints, identifies issues and takes corrective actions.

Equipment Maintenance
36. Cleans and maintains an inventory of hand tools, work equipment and specialized tools for
water and waste water operations.
37. Completes circle checks and reports defects on heavy equipment used for water and waste water
38. Conducts preventative maintenance and repair work on electrical pumps, valves, mixers and
piping and checks valves and drains.
39. Monitors, cleans and re-calibrates water and wastewater treatment analyzers.

Equipment Operation
40. Operates de-chlorination equipment to remove chlorine residual when disposing of system water.
41. Operates mechanical equipment including a Vactor Truck to flush, clear and repair blocked
sewer mains and customer laterals.
Public Area Maintenance
42. Cleans up spills of a variety of materials, including hazardous materials.
43. Paints a variety of surfaces.
Facility Maintenance
44. Maintains the building and grounds of the Waste Water and Water Treatment Plants, shoveling
snow, cutting and trimming grass and changing light bulbs.

45. Completes log book entries and daily record sheets and prepares reports and work orders.
46. Performs Operator-in-charge duties.
47. Maintains work areas in a clean and safe manner.
48. Complies with Ministry legislative requirements.
49. Complies with Municipality of Kincardine policies and procedures.
50. Performs other tasks as assigned by management.
