Water & Wastewater Engineer – Intermediate

R.J. Burnside & Associates Limited (Burnside) is currently seeking a Water & Wastewater Engineer with 5 – 10 years of experience to join our municipal water and wastewater team. We are looking for a detail-oriented individual who likes to get right down to the nuts and bolts of a project and enjoys working in a collaborative, multi-discipline team.

The primary focus of this position will be to work closely with our Project Managers and Senior Engineers to undertake a wide variety of engineering tasks including planning, assessing, designing, obtaining approvals, tendering and providing contract administration.  Projects typically will be for municipal and some private sector water and wastewater infrastructure related to water supply, treatment, storage and distribution as well as wastewater collection, pumping, treatment and disposal projects.

There is the option to work out of the following office locations:

  • Collingwood
  • Orangeville

Our team utilizes a number of electronic tools to allow us to work collaboratively with team members across our various offices; however, individuals in this role typically find themselves having to travel to another office and/or a client site a few times a month.

Role Specifics

Reporting to Senior Water and Wastewater Engineers, the position will involve supporting a team of project managers, engineers and technicians, to assist in the delivery of projects by carrying out the following tasks:

  • Producing preliminary and detailed design drawings and preparation of related reports
  • Coordinating the application for the required permits and approvals
  • Developing construction cost estimates at different stages of a project
  • Liaising with clients, sub-consultants and contractors
  • Supporting senior construction inspectors and contract administrators in the field and office to assist them with resolving construction challenges discovered in the field
  • Preparing a wide variety of documents including proposals, technical memorandums, meeting minutes, technical specifications, and reports utilizing the templates developed both by our team and the corporate standards;
  • Undertaking a number of various assignments including condition assessments and associated asset management planning; environmental assessments/screenings; and studies such as planning studies, feasibility studies, treatability studies, servicing studies, etc.
  • Other duties as assigned.

The role also includes working under the guidance of our water and wastewater leadership team to:

  • Develop the skills of our younger team members and new team members;
  • Ensure design quality standards are met; and
  • Develop and implement tools to assist in improving both the quality and efficiency of our designs.

The vision and long-term expectation of this role is that this individual will be assigned the lead technical role on projects, under the guidance of our Senior Engineers, to assist our Project Managers in getting the project completed on-time and on-budget.  Limited project management and business development contribution is expected with this role.

Professional Knowledge, Skills & Qualifications

The following qualifications, experience and skills are required:

  • An engineering degree in a related discipline
  • A license to practice engineering with one of the provincial regulatory bodies in Canada or the ability to obtain a license within one year of hiring.
  • Knowledge of municipal and provincial approval processes as well as relevant agency and industry standards, guideline and best practices
  • Use of Microsoft Office365 and related products such as Word, Excel, Powerpoint as well Microsoft Project.
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills
  • Excellent organization skills with the ability to multi-task and work on a number of projects concurrently

The following experience and skills are considered assets but are not requirements: 

  • Horizontal municipal infrastructure design, project management, contract administration and client relationships
  • Use of computer-aided design and or BIM software such as AutoCAD, Revit, Civil 3D and MicroStation
  • Experience with modeling using software tools such as WaterCAD, InfoWater and SewerCAD
