Managing Building Water Quality to Control Legionella and Other Opportunistic Pathogens: Utility and Building Owners’ Roles

Legionnaire’s Disease is the number one waterborne disease in the US, and the number of people with LD is increasing each year, including in the Province of Ontario. Jurisdictions vary in their regulatory approach to managing opportunistic pathogens and water quality in buildings, and although not yet regulated in Ontario, experience from Quebec, Europe and the US will be of interest to Ontario utilities as they are increasingly faced with questions of water quality on private property. When there is a Legionella outbreak in a health care facility, the source of the outbreak is linked to the building’s water; yet the responsibility of the drinking water system ends at the property line.

This workshop will share information to provide context for this issue, provide updates from researchers on both the technical and communication aspects, introduce the HACCP concept as applied to building water quality, review case studies to describe tools and approaches, and finish with a hands-on exercise to allow attendees to apply what they have learned to their own systems.

Ryerson Urban Water Green Infrastructure Workshop

Ryerson Urban Water will host the “Implementing Green Infrastructure: Building a Community of Practice” workshop on June 18-19, 2018 at Ryerson University. This workshop aims to advance green infrastructure and low impact development (LID) by gathering interdisciplinary groups to collaborate and resolve obstacles to implementation.

Cross-practitioner discussion is a game changer. Engineers and architects need to work with landscape architects at the planning stage and incorporate green infrastructure in designs for site and landscape plans, rather than an after-thought following building siting or designs for stormwater management infrastructure.

There are many examples of green infrastructure demonstrations and big picture thinking. However, uptake has been slower than required to achieve government policy and climate change requirements. Governance and local conditions are perceived to be the only barriers, yet lessons can be learned from successful projects.

This workshop will generate a new form of interdisciplinary practice specifically designed to address these challenges.

Additional information and registration are available here.
