Young Professionals/Students

What Do Young Professionals Do?

We are the future of the OWWA! We represent the up and coming members of the drinking water industry.

We provide an opportunity for young professionals (YPs) to learn and network within the industry by organizing plant tours, seminars, and social events. We also organize the YP Session and lots of fun activities at the annual conference, as well as manage the OWWA’s Student Chapter Program. See our Committee Charter for more information about our mandate and activities.

The YP program was developed by the AWWA and has been adopted by several sections. Formed in 1999, the OWWA’s YP Committee boasts one of the AWWA’s most active YP committees. For more information about YP activities at the AWWA level, check out the AWWA Young Professionals Center.

Who Are We?

Our membership is primarily comprised of industry professionals with less than 10 years experience or under 35 years of age. However, “seasoned professionals” can always be found at our great events!

Our YP membership includes individuals from many facets of the water industry, including students, consultants, operators, municipal engineers, equipment manufacturers and suppliers, technicians, conservation authority staff, individuals who work for federal or provincial government developing policy, and many others.

Student Chapters

Managed through the OWWA’s YP Committee, the OWWA Student Chapter Program provides students with opportunities to learn about water and the water industry, meet like-minded students, and network with water industry professionals.

Participating in activities such as seminars, treatment plant tours, and social events through a student chapter provides you with endless opportunities to build leadership skills, expand your technical knowledge, and network with people in the water industry.

The University of Toronto formed an OWWA Student Chapter in 2005 and the University of Waterloo did the same in 2008. Click on the links below to find out more about our student chapters.

If you are interested in establishing an OWWA student chapter at your university/college, please contact the YPC’s Student Chapter Liaison who will provide you with information and help you get started.
